Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has determined that workers have a, “right to know” what chemical hazards are present in their particular work areas, or what chemical hazards they might encounter on their work sites. The GHS system, part of OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), consists of nine symbols, or pictograms, providing recognition of the hazards associated with certain substances. Use of eight of the nine are mandatory in the U.S., the exception being the environmental pictogram (see below). Hazard symbols are designed to provide a warning, even if a person cannot understand the writing that goes with them. It is, therefore, important to keep it away from combustible, flammable, and spontaneously combustible materials. This helps ensure the dangers present are understood by an increasingly multi-lingual workforce. The shapes and colours of the safety symbols distinguish the hazard type or hazard instruction. The third set are now out of date but may still be seen on some packages. Safety signs and symbols are crucial in laboratories as they indicate different hazards present around the area. Moreover, these safety communicating tools relay warnings to workers to be vigilant and keep watching out for those hazards by providing necessary information and instructions for safety.
